Sweetest sight on rails: a
rainbow-hued string of tri-level auto racks, loaded at St. Paul's Ford Plant and
ready to roll west over Great Northern's main line. Railroaders take particular
pride in this traffic, which only a few years ago moved almost entirely by
truck. New equipment, fast service, competitive rates and an outstanding record
of no-damage deliveries turned the tide. GN's haul of new automobiles and trucks
in 1962 was quadruple that of 1958, while nationally one out of four new
automobiles produced last year moved from assembly plant to distribution point
by rail. |
